Behind The Curtain – The World of Burlesque

INSTRUCTOR: Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai
DATE: TBA
PRICE: TBA
LOCATION: Denver, CO
STUDENT LEVEL: Beginner through Advanced
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 10

For several years the highly crafted and emotionally engaging black and white portraits created by Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai have caused a stir nationally and abroad. Her recent Backstage  project, which takes and intimate behind-the-curtain look at the performers in the burlesque troop in which she regularly performs, is no exception. By focusing the lens on her colleagues and friends she has, in essence, turned the spotlight on herself. The resulting images, reminiscent of vaudevillian days gone by, are nothing less than spectacular.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN – THE WORLD OF BURLESQUE is a photographic workshop inspired by her above mentioned Backstage project. This is your chance to be mentored, if only for a day, by one of today’s premier photographers.

This workshop is open to all photographers who have a competent knowledge of the fundamental use of their camera, analog or digital. It will take place in the controlled environment of a studio set up to simulate an actual night at a burlesque club. This will include a chance for students to work one-on-one to create portraits with each of the burlesque performers, as well as an opportunity to make candid photos in a simulated backstage dressing area. Along with learning how to deal with fixed lighting, you will learn how to use carefully planned angles and selective depth of field to eliminate distracting backgrounds in order to make interesting and dynamic pictures. The workshop will conclude with the students photographing a live burlesque show.

Cheryl will offer a critique* of the students best images** at a date TBA at the workshop.

*Certain criteria need to be met in order to qualify for the critique.
**A maximum of twenty photos.
